Flipbook Workshop

A youth course on making flipbooks.
The course will explore and explain the basic elements of design, from the simple materials
(paper, pen, scissors, staplers) to the design methods (sequential timing, spatial reasoning)
in simple, hands-on lessons.

Zariyein in November 2006 was primarily aimed at gaining a foothold and finding entry points in the amorphous space that Khirkee is. The predominant question in our heads (as people given to research and representation) was how does one begin to and arrive at knowing a space that is so outside of our own lived realities. Keeping this question in mind, we sought collaboration with a few residents of Khirkee to create a collective understanding and representation of this space using the medium of photographs and conversations.

Zariyein in Meghalaya in the months of June and July was different as it was allied with another research project that we have been doing in Shillong and the East Khasi Hills District of Meghalaya. This time Zariyein has become a means to unravel various strands of our research questions and understand and document various arenas that we thought were significant for this process.

Portraits- Photography Workshop

This Photography Workshop was conducted in collaboration with Hannah Matthew for the students of the Gyandeep School. The workshop, which began on the 12th of April 2007 and concluded on the 1st of May 2007, was one ina series of workshops conducted with the students of the Gyandeep School, in the Khirkee neighborhood.

Zariyein

Zariyein was part I of a concerted three week community art project, using photographic images and texts produced by a few residents of Khirki (extension and village) and Hauzrani. Broadly, the project was aimed at a collective creation of a visual-scape of Khirki inflected with the inhabitant's sense of space in their lives. The project involved the creation of an interactive four wall mobile installation of images (still and video), texts along with audio recordings of the process and responses to the installation and interactions.

Khirkee ki Khoj: Shop Make-over Project

As part of the larger Khoj Community Arts Project initiative, the project engaged with the shopkeepers who are the primary residents of the street, and entailed a group of two or three artists working in collaboration with a shopkeeper, establishing a rapport, exchanging ideas and developing a collective method of art-making.

Khirkee-ki-Khoj: Temple Installation

The Sai Baba temple is a landmark in Khirkee Village. A stone's throw from the KHOJ studios, it was chosen as an important site for an installation. After several discussions with the temple priest , the artists Ram Bali and Aastha Chauhan finalised the installation design. In tune with the resounding temple bells, the installation envisaged was a 6 feet globe like structure made of iron, which had 450 bells of various sizes welded onto it. A pivot base enabled the structure to spin along its axis.

The scupture was installed by the priest with much fanfare and is now a part of the perambulations of the temple visitors in the temple courtyard.

Nandita Kumar set up her studio in Hauz Khas and worked with the children around her studio, to create murals/installations and art works with and by the children. After completing BFA at Auckland University in New Zealand she came to Delhi to explore the Gali Art

Khirkee-ki-Khoj: Khirkee Mural

Khoj has initiated a series of projects that aim to take art out of the gallery space and back into the public domain. In our previous tryst with the Khirki community, we mapped the street, made friends with a few residents and held a show where we photographed friends and understood their perspectives on friendship. We also did a Kite making workshop for the children in the community. In continuation with the community based art projects, the wall facing the Khoj Studios has been transformed into a gigantic canvas.

The Khirkee mural project ran from the 1-10 of April 2005 and with inputs from the community at every stage of the process, the resulting mural is a true marriage of the aesthetics of both community and artist.

Khirkee-ki-Khoj: Arts Education Program

The Khirkee mural executed in May 2005 was a success in more ways than one. Following its completion KHOJ was approached by the Principal of the Gyan Deep Public School, a small organization that is quite literally on the same street as the KHOJ Studios, inviting the artists who had painted the mural to take their art classes.

A group of artists took up the challenge of completely revamping the arts curriculum Aastha Chauhan, Sanjay Sharma, Ram Bali Chauhan, Rohini Devasher and Sonia Mehra Chawla took art classes twice a week every week for six months.

Khirkee-ki-Khoj: Kite-Making Workshop for Children

We did our second workshop of “Kite making” for the children. We invited skilled kite makers from Old Delhi and invited 20 children from the street to learn kite making. On the 22nd of January 2005 the children poured in and by the time we were winding up the number of participating children had escalated up to 26. The enthusiasm of the children was a lot more than it had been in any of the previous workshops we had ever held.
