City [In] Visible

An art project which will be generating dialogues and narratives with local communities in the neighborhood of Khirkee village. These communities subsist on daily-wage earnings in small workshops and factories, as construction labourers, as artisans. Though barely seen, they remain a crucial demographic variable within the rapidly expanding and impersonal cosmopolitan ethos of high-end shopping complexes, business centres and corporate habitats.
Within the relentlessly mutating metropolitan landscape today, the migrant working class is subject to various powerful modes of alienation, even while the city enlarges these communities’ frames of reference, deconstructs small town and rural prejudices, offers a range of new affiliations, and new possibilities of personal freedom. Both hostile and hospitable, this paradoxical space of seductive modernity and burgeoning new capital is a dramatic arena
of technological efficiency, fetishism, affluence and material fixation, as well as an interface fostering human connectivity and the creation of significant informal local networks that allow people to survive in the absence of secure work.

Transportraits

The workshop that took place at Khoj,Delhi, was a part of an international project dealing with the individual in a changin in urban environment. Other workshops will be held in Marseilles, France and Helsinki, Finland.
The inhabitants of Khirki village neighbourhood first learned some basic video shooting and sound recording skills. After that they directed their own autoportraits, deciding the way they wanted to be shown.Then they filmed a place that has changed in their neighbourhood. They talked about, and recorded the memories and feelings linked to that place. In the final work,- a video installation - the portraits of people and places filmed in different cities will be connected. New final portraits will be composed superposing the images of a person and the place he feels attached to.

Visual Poetry and Body Calligraphy

Visual Poetry and Body Calligraphy Project was organised by Jose Abad and supported by Deaf Ways, the Spanish Embassy and KHOJ. Based on interdisciplinary arts that blend together Spanish poetry, photography, Indian sign language, body movement, and gesture, Visual Poetry and Body Calligraphy was a participatory community based art project implemented within the Deaf community in New Delhi. The aim of the art project was to explore disability and representation through a range of different performative concepts. The goal was to explore the body as tool for language and visual communication.

INSIDE / OUTSIDE: K D Thorton and Surajit Sarkar

INSIDE / OUTSIDE: an interactive digital art project by artists Karen D Thorton (Canada) and Surajit Sarkar (Delhi) .... Central to this artwork was the idea of bringing the inside to the outside / or the outside in. Using fragments of digitally captured life, INSIDE/OUTSIDE employed video images and sound, combing them in ways that brings unexpected visions into gallery art.

Karen was supported by the Canada Council for the Arts for her work in India.

The Yamuna Project

2007’s opening Residency at KHOJ focused on the theme of Eco Art . It hosted two Delhi based artists -> Atul Bhalla who works with sculpture, performance and photographs + photographer Ravi Aggarwal. Both artists have had several years of engagement with the river Yamuna in Delhi as a water and ecological entity.

This art project examined the role that art practices can play in a collective trauma such as that which gripped Gujarat that year, and addresses a range of issues from personal loss to displacement, and the possibility of mobilization and economic revival through the use of the visual language.

Brendan Jamison (Belfast)
Brendan Jamison worked on a series of outdoor site-specific wool works, which were created in direct response to the architectural features of the KHOJ Studios, combined with a selection of small sculptures created in response to Vasudha Thozur's community based art projects.

Colouring Outside the Lines

Facilitated by Saba Qizilbash, the project focused on the current process of peace and creative exchange between the artist communities of India and Pakistan inclusive of Kashmiri artists. ‘Colouring Outside the Lines’ was modeled as a model visual arts workshop series designed to pedagogically intervene, and introduce inter-cultural conflict management strategies between ‘demographies’ that have had a history of shared culture, yet live in a conflict torn present, which have resulted in minimum inter-cultural accessibility and creative exchange.

Arabian Night

An experimental play directed by Zuleikha Chaudhari based on Arabian Night by Roland Schimmelpfenig and translated by Rajesh Tailang. Arabian Night succeeds in evoking the muggy and heavy heat of the Orient that turns each movement into a titanic effort and drives the unleashed spirit back into the abyss of the unconscious. Fear and desire are no longer speechless. They well up in pictures out of Thousand and One Nights.

Khirkeeyaan: Shaina Anand

” Khirkee-yaan" was the exploration and employment of an open circuit TV system as a network, communication feedback and intervention device within Khirkee environs. Through the month of April 06, the artist Shaina Anand developed Khirkeeyaan as an extension of process-oriented and self-organised in-situ public media interventions.

A documentary filmmaker and media artist based in Mumbai, Shaina Anand is the Founder of ChitraKarKhana (picture factory/artist food) a fully independent unit for experimental media.
