International ECO+ART Residency Nov-Dec 2007

KHOJ is hosting an International Residency in an attempt to explore the relationship between Ecology & Art in public spaces from 12th November to 20th December 2007 in the city of Delhi. Delhi is a bustling metropolis which has undergone a vast developmental change, changing the historical & ecological map of the city in the last century. More and more, the environment may be perceived as much of a political realm as an ecological one, from the perspective of production, consumption and of ownership rights.

This pilot residency explored the intersections of art, science and technology. Bringing together two Indian artists and two International artists for a period of six weeks, the residency aimed to encourage creative and experimental collaborations between scientists and artists and further enhance public engagement with both science and art. Performance Art 2007

Performance Art 2007 marked the third in a series of Residencies curated around Performance Art, since the first in 2004. 2007 brought together 5 artists with completely diverse work profiles under the broad umbrella of the tag - Performance Art.

The first Performance Residency in 2004 was significant for the emphasis placed on the body and the politics surrounding it, while 2006's residency saw a greater focus on live performances in the public sphere.

'Sound art' has emerged as a media that challenges the defined categories of sound /art /visual art /music /science /engineering. Creative experiments with sound play on the fringes of our often-unconscious aural experience in spaces. The four-week intensive KHOJ International Sound Residency between Nov 10 to 30, 06 was aimed at exploring the nexus between technology, sound-scapes and creativity.

The aim of this residency was to expand the definition of "public art" beyond public artifact by exploring the role and context of art and its audiences in the urban environment. 3 international and 2 Indian artists who work in the public domain were invited to participate in the 6 week residency from mid august to end sept 06. Assorted public art projects and interventions took place all over the city between 9–17 September.

The 2006 Performance art residency was curated with the intention to bring together various practices within ‘Performance’ and ‘live art’ and create a potpourri of talents, aiming to re-energise and redefine the concept and practice of ‘Performance’ in India. To be able to pursue this direction, the residency was expanded to include seven artists. Each artist came from diverse trajectories, and each through their practice worked towards opening up newer spaces within the dominant trends of ‘Performance’.

In an attempt to explore how the creative use of sound complicates the neat categories of sound /art /visual art /music /science /engineering’, KHOJ organised a one week intensive sound workshop between Jan 16- 22, 06. At a time when the mainstream engagement is moving increasingly towards the visual, the pilot workshop explored the nexus between technology, soundscapes and creativity. KHOJ played host to sonic practioners from diverse backgrounds and provided a discursive space where diverse practices, engagements with technology and approaches to ‘new media’ could be sensed, exchanged and engaged. Photography Residency 2005

In the previous century, photography helped shape art; in the current one, it has begun to dominate it. Not only are major international museums and galleries mounting blockbuster exhibitions, but art photographers are also being celebrated as contemporary masters. Both India and South Asia have strong traditions of documentary/reportage photography and an increasing number of visual artists are choosing to work exclusively with this medium while others adopt a more interdisciplinary approach.

The KHOJ PHOTOGRAPHY RESIDENCY sought to interrogate the "digital-ness" of photography as a medium and all that implies -- interaction and collaboration, manipulation and realism, and authenticity and authority by bringing together photographers / artists from the various sub genres of the medium such as documentary / reportage / portraiture / landscape / journalism / art photography etc.

"Much of the public art that we know today had its inception in site-specific projects. But we in KHOJ would like to propose in this residency a pursuance of public art where the site-specificity transcends from being a mere spatio-physical intervention to becoming an extension of the community within which the project will be situated. It would be interesting to recognize that space within the community is not merely a physical measurement but a social, economic and political entity. It derives its dynamism from the fact that most of these spaces are contested. They become means of expression for the community rather than just a means of transit."

Given that India boasts a rich and fertile tradition of dance and theatre, it is interesting that the move towards performance in the visual arts has not been particularly palpable. The 2004 International Residency at KHOJ explored an art form that continues to raise eyebrows and throw up questions about the nature of art practice. The artists in residence from Jakarta, Belo HoriZonte, Brazil, Amsterdam and Mumbai came from diverse backgrounds, ranging from theatre to studio-based performance. It was an intense period of working together, towards exploring notions of body, materials, space and time.
