INSIDE / OUTSIDE: K D Thorton and Surajit Sarkar

INSIDE / OUTSIDE: an interactive digital art project by artists Karen D Thorton (Canada) and Surajit Sarkar (Delhi) .... Central to this artwork was the idea of bringing the inside to the outside / or the outside in. Using fragments of digitally captured life, INSIDE/OUTSIDE employed video images and sound, combing them in ways that brings unexpected visions into gallery art.

Karen was supported by the Canada Council for the Arts for her work in India.

Public Art Residency 06

The aim of this residency was to expand the definition of "public art" beyond public artifact by exploring the role and context of art and its audiences in the urban environment. 3 international and 2 Indian artists who work in the public domain were invited to participate in the 6 week residency from mid august to end sept 06. Assorted public art projects and interventions took place all over the city between 9–17 September.

Dilli Dur Ast: A Lens based Workshop in the Walled City of Old Delhi

"Dilli Dur Ast" was an attempt to interrogate/intervene /understand the walled city of Old Delhi. Artists Atul Bhalla, Gigi Scaria and Himanshu Desai lived and worked within the walled city for a month developing individual projects in response to and in some cases, in collaboration with the local community of Old Delhi.

This project was conceived and programmed by Gigi Scaria in collaboration with Atul Bhalla and Himanshu Desai. It was supported by KHOJ and partially supported by Devi Art Foundation.

"Much of the public art that we know today had its inception in site-specific projects. But we in KHOJ would like to propose in this residency a pursuance of public art where the site-specificity transcends from being a mere spatio-physical intervention to becoming an extension of the community within which the project will be situated. It would be interesting to recognize that space within the community is not merely a physical measurement but a social, economic and political entity. It derives its dynamism from the fact that most of these spaces are contested. They become means of expression for the community rather than just a means of transit."

I am interested in’ P u b l i c A r t ’ that emphasizes a process of engagement with issues, and when the work emerges out of extended dialogical and personal interaction with the groups of people and individuals; the dialogue becomes two–way and interactive which respects and invites multiple
points of views.

Concept

What exactly contributes to a city's boundaries to exist? Answers to this question span from a thousand page book to a two word statement. In either case key words such as feudalism, migration, modernization/industrialization, colonialism ,are some of the important points of reference.

The 'city-structure' as a phenomena spreads across the outskirts and merges into the rural landscape where one may not find the exact demarcation of the city wall as it was more visible in the old times.
