Khirkee Workers Educational Training

The past 2 days KHOJ provided its studios as a venue for a seminar conducted by The Central Board for Workers Education for migrant workers of the Khirki community, to inform them about basic labour rights. We used one of the larger studios to house the various sessions where different speakers spoke about laws and the right to information to the participants.

Zariyein, in its first phase, was carried out in Khirki Village and was directed towards arriving at a very basic “knowing” of the space, Khirki, using the medium of photographs and conversations to try and create a collective understanding and representation of the space. We would now like to extend the scope of Zariyein by using the same methods in an altogether distinct context – Meghalaya.

Community Film Screening

The community project of showing Charlie Chaplin’s film to the Khirki Village people was half successful and half aborted. Despite the effort put in the setting up of the speakers, placing the screen and seeking permission from the temple authorities to show in their lawn the project failed just because of the power cut. When the screening started we could see a number of kids eagerly waiting.

To coincide with the Khoj Nov-Dec International Artist's Residency focusing on Photography, we decided to do a photography workshop with the senior students of the Gyan Deep Public School. The workshop began with two days of the students photographing in Khirkee and was followed by a presentation of their photographs and a discussion led by artists-in-residence Sheba Chachhi and Gauri Gill.

We were approached by the principal of Gyandeep School, (a school located along the same street as the Khoj Studios), she wanted us to work with the children of the school. After negotiating time and classes we started taking weekly art classes for the school. We have taught them for three weeks now. The school is relatively small; the classes are only up to grade 7.

An integral part of all the Khoj Residencies, outreach encompases slide shows and presentations, artist's talks and an Open Studio Day where the artist's practice is open to viewing by the public.

Artists Presentations:

The Peers shared their practice past and present with each other and with an audience of students and artists. It was an exciting evening and a daunting prospect for some of the artist's. The slide presentations were followed by informal discussions and interacts between the audience and the peers.
