Light Workshop

The Light Workshop was organised for the members of the KHOJ Advisory Group of Artists. This was an in-house week long workshop, where each artist worked on individual compositions using different lighting devices.

Vasudha Thozhur (Baroda)
This art project examined the role that art practices can play in a collective trauma such as that which gripped Gujarat that year, and addresses a range of issues from personal loss to displacement, and the possibility of mobilization and economic revival through the use of the visual language.

Brendan Jamison (Belfast)
Brendan Jamison worked on a series of outdoor site-specific wool works, which were created in direct response to the architectural features of the KHOJ Studios, combined with a selection of small sculptures created in response to Vasudha Thozur's community based art projects.

Peers 2006

PEERS is a 4-week residency programme for recent graduates from art colleges across India initiated with support from the India Foundation for the Arts (IFA), which provides an opportunity for exchange and dialogue. The PEERS Program hopes to create a regular forum for experimentation, development, and critique within an alternative educational framework. PEERS 2006 brought together a diverse group of students from across the country onto a common platform that worked to provide an opportunity for open knowledge sharing within the group and the community.

The Death and Transformation of the Monkey King: An Alchemical Fairytale

Ann McCoy is a New York artist who studied alchemy in Zurich for 25 years with Jung’s main assistant C. A. Meier. Her work deals with mythology, depth psychology, comparative religion, and the dream world.

Her exhibition at KHOJ represented a radical departure from her past work. Disturbed by the current policies of the Bush administration with the war in Iraq and the environmental devastation that is occurring, this exhibition was dedicated to her brother Dr. Michael McCoy D.V.M. who spent thirty years making the Tijuana Estuary wetlands preserve. This wetlands preserve is being destroyed by the Bush administration to mount a fence along the Mexican border.

This exhibition was planned as part of our initiative to bring creative practitioners from diverse disciplines together at KHOJ studios to create a stimulating environment for critical discourses and dialogue. KEYWORDS & BAANS (Bamboo) brought together contemporary artist Anita Dube with young architect Asim Waqif.

Home - Adreas Kaiser

HOME is a global project Andreas Kaiser began 3 years ago. He collected over 300 drawings of German Houses. With these drawings in 2003 he traveled to South Africa. In workshops through! out South Africa he collected drawings from children aged 8-12. After that he handed out the German drawings together with a piece of clay, to build a German house after the German drawing. All the houses were fired and shown in an installation in the Bag Factory Johannesburg and the Goethe Institute. In 2004 Andreas went to Australia and repeated the workshops with over 300 children. The Australian children built South African Homes to be shoen at IASKA in western Australia. Delhi is the third station of HOME. In several workshops surrounding Delhi Andreas worked with over 300 children again. All the Australian Homes built by Indian children were shown in a site specific installation at the Khoj Studios, on display for only one day on Thursday the 29th of September 2005.

PEERS 2005 was an exciting platform for Bhupal, Himanshu, Sanhita, Rajesh, Malvika and Rohini and the work on display at the Khoj Studios spoke eloquently of their drive and enthusiasm.

Desire Machine is a multi media collective based in North east India, working with the politics of representation and confictign contexts of the region. The everyday experience of violence that is created out of imposed imagined geographies, pushed into the periphery of the imagination of a nation state.
