Sonic Arts 06

'Sound art' has emerged as a media that challenges the defined categories of sound /art /visual art /music /science /engineering. Creative experiments with sound play on the fringes of our often-unconscious aural experience in spaces. The four-week intensive KHOJ International Sound Residency between Nov 10 to 30, 06 was aimed at exploring the nexus between technology, sound-scapes and creativity.

More and more, the environment may be perceived as much a political realm as an ecological one, from the perspective of production, consumption and of ownership rights. Artists, in turn, are responding by answering collective cultural needs and developing active and practical roles in environmental and social issues. Within this context Khoj in collaboration with CHINTAN, an environment research and action group organised the International Residency for August and September 2004, around the theme of Art and the Environment. The residency focused on the importance of facilitating a sustainable balance between man and nature through restoration, education, and multidisciplinary collaboration.

The participating artists in this residency were Dhara Riviera from Puerto Rico, Shukla Sawant and Prashant Soni from India, Manuel Bouzo from Spain, Matej Gavula from Slovakia, with Roobina Karode as critic-in-residence. The residency addressed the dialectics of the place, the city and its multiple layers, the visuality of a transforming environment and critiqued urban inspirations that brought into focus the risks and challenges that face the common man.

For the Khoj International Residency 2003, Khirkee Village served as the site and source for the participating artists to develop ideas and generate discourse. It meant re-reading and exploring India and the diversity Delhi, within the mini cosmos that is Khirkee.

During the course of an intense six weeks, the Khoj Studios proved to be an expanding accommodating platform to support and encourage exchange between these individuals from diverse backgrounds, disciplines and practices.

16th Feb to 27th March 2003.

The Second Khoj International Residency explored the sculptural and plastic arts. Scheduled from the 16th feb to the 27th March 2003, the residency played host to eight artists from France, Nepal, Denmark, Mexico and India.

Pilot Residency 2000

This was the first pilot residency programme organised by the Khoj Workshop inviting artists from the UK, Sri Lanka and Delhi to work together in a studio, which was a large warehouse in Khirkee village, New Delhi, loaned to us by friend and photographer Pablo Bartholomew.
