Pius Sigit Kuncoro was born on April 17, 1974 in Yogyakarta. Pius received his art education at the Indonesian Art Institute during 1992-1998. Pius also attended several workshops and residencies, namely at “Artist in residence” in Ibaraki, Japan (2001-2002); “Artist workshop” in Nagoya, Japan (2003); “KHOJ artist workshop” in Bangalore, India (2004); “Artist in residence” at the Fukuoka Asian Contemporary Art Museum, Japan (2005); and “Artist in residence” at CAP House Kobe, Japan (2007).

In 1999, Pius together with Bintang Hanggono and Wildan Antares founded an interdisciplinary art-performance group called “Geber Modus Operandi”. Initially Pius was known to produce works in the form of performance-art, but in his development Pius also used the medium of drawing and painting for his works. Pius’ two-dimensional work is known to have a realist style with a message in the form of satirical criticism.

Pius first performed performance art in 1999 in Yogyakarta, Makassar and The Hague (Netherlands). in 2000, Pius held his first solo exhibition entitled “I Feel Fine” at Kedai Kebun, Yogyakarta. Pius’ other solo exhibitions include “The Final Battle” at IVAA Hobby Studio, Yogyakarta (2008); “Mission Sacre” at SIGIart Gallery, Jakarta (2009); “Jowo Adoh Papan” on Via Via Café Traveler, Yogyakarta (2011); and “Nyandhi Wara” at Sangkring Art Space, Yogyakarta (2011).

In the “Nyandhi Wara” exhibition, Pius presented 25 works of watercolor paintings on canvas. In one of his works entitled “Ngadigang Ngadigung Rung Adiguna”, Pius depicts a boxer with a mustache like Charlie Chaplin in the mirror. The boxer’s back has a “Mother’s blessing” tattoo, and around him is a photo of his mother, and in the mirror there is a reflection of himself and a woman sleeping on the bed. One of the works on display is considered to depict the ups and downs of life in one whole story frame, in a light and humorous way.
