K.T. Shivaprasad (b. 1947)
Shivaprasad veered away from engineering college to study at Sir JJ School of Art
in Mumbai, obtaining a diploma in painting in 1973.
Transcending the early influence of European Abstract Expressionism, he today
explores the relationships between reality and illusion inspired by Andy Warhol
and the 20th century Pop Art movement. In the late 1970s Shivaprasad painted a
series of male nudes and later, portraits of villagers in natural environs, which soon
became more abstract than figurative.
Akin to the great British modernist Lucien Freud, K T Shivaprasad’s work has won
national and international acclaim. His canvases reflect the great pleasure he has
finally found in his painting, and a deep connection with his subjects. He also is an
avid photographer and architectural consultant.
The artist has had many solo exhibitions, key ones being at Jehangir Art Gallery,
Mumbai in 1987, 1982 and 1992; Sakshi Gallery in Chennai and Bangalore in 1991
and 1992; Untitled, The Museum Art Gallery, Mumbai, 2007; prestigious collectives
like the Bhopal Biennale in 1988, the Bombay Art Society Centenary Invitees show
in 1989, Gallery, Hong Kong in 1996, Contemporary Indian Painters, Jehangir, 1996;
Gallery Romain Rolland, New Delhi, 2006; The Museum Art Gallery, Mumbai, 2008;

In 2001 Shivaprasad was conferred the prestigious Karnataka Rajyotsava Award by
