Open Call: residency opportunity for artists and curators living in India

For detailed information about Spoleto, Anna Mahler and Sol LeWitt, please click here.

The Mahler & LeWitt Studios residencies value personal space for creative reflection whilst also encouraging in-depth and dynamic working relationships to evolve between peers and an engagement with the region. A rich network of professionals – artists, gallerists, art historians and curators – in Umbria and internationally are brought together by the program. Each residency is facilitated in response to an individual’s needs and interests.

The responsive nature of the residencies, inspired by encounters within the town, Umbria or with other artists, tends to encourage experimentation. The Studios curator helps facilitate events or exhibitions, when appropriate, during the residencies. Further to this, informal weekly events are arranged for visiting artists with curators, writers, historians and artisans. Both visiting artists and locals may contribute to the program which has included film screenings, talks and workshops.

A public presentation – The Mahler & LeWitt Studios residency program concentrates on the process of research and development. However, at the end of the session each resident is asked to present their work (in progress) to a public audience. Previous presentations have taken the form of exhibitions, conversations, screenings, performances or workshops.

Documentation – As part of the process of evaluating the residency and reflecting on their work in Spoleto, each resident is asked to develop a contribution to an end-of-year Mahler & LeWitt Studios publication, made available online and in print. Previous contributions have included interviews with the curator, texts, original artworks or a combination of all three.

Selection

Selection of residents is predominantly made on the quality of the artistic work and its suitability for development in the context of a residency at the Mahler & LeWitt Studios. We recommend that applicants familiarise themselves with our previous projects and residencies, in order to understand the kind of work we might be able to facilitate. Information on our 2010 – 2014 projects can be found at annamahler.org, and for projects between 2015 – 2016 at mahler-lewitt.org. We recommend applicants read the ‘About’ sections on both websites.

The residency opportunity is for emerging and mid-career artists and curators. We are open to artists working in any media and are particularly interested in applicants who are exploring new ways of developing their practice.

The following criteria will be followed when the selection committee appoints a resident:

  1. The quality of the applicant’s creative work.
  2. The extent to which the applicant’s proposal reflects the Mahler & LeWitt Studios program and the opportunity this award offers.
  3. The potential for the award to have a significant impact on the applicant’s creative development.

We are interested in receiving proposals from applicants who can demonstrate a particular interest in visiting the Mahler & LeWitt Studios or Italy more generally, however applications which do not demonstrate this will be considered equally. We will look for candidates whose needs and interests are compatible with our facilities and expertise.

Successful applicants will be:

  • Proficient English speakers. However, no prior knowledge of Italian is necessary
  • Indian citizens
  • Aged 35 or under
