Open Call for Residency

The Kuona Trust Arts Centre shares a commitment to raising the awareness and understanding of contemporary art and celebrating diverse cultures and viewpoints through its residency, exhibition and
education programs. Each year, various artists are selected to be in residency at the Centre with the objective of providing meaningful interactions with the community through collaboration, outreach and innovative programming.

Kuona Trust offers artists an amazing opportunity to experience the vibrant cultural and visual arts scene of Nairobi as well as experience in working with a dynamic group of artists. The programme is open to artists working in any medium and who are inspired by a diverse global culture, committed to artistic investigation, and are interested in community engagement. We are currently accepting applications for the 2 month Artist in Residency Program for the following

periods:

1. June- July 2015
2. August to September 2015 and
3. October to November 2015.

Selection Process

Selections are made by the Kuona Trust Arts Centre programmes staff. Artists are selected based on the quality of their work, written narrative and an interest in participating in a stimulating and creative environment. Previous experience working collaboratively within a residency program and cultural facility is preferable.

Eligibility

The residency program is open to emerging, mid-career and senior level artists working in any medium.The programme is only open to artists residing outside Kenya.

Facilities

The artist in residence will be provided with a spacious studio space located at Kuona Trust and have twenty-four hour access to the Centre’s facilities. He/she will also receive a stipend, travel allowance for
local transport and housing during the residency period. It is also expected that the artist stay for the full residency period (2months).

Transportation

The Kuona Trust Centre for Visual Art has subcontracted a private hire service from a tours and safari company, and makes this available on a first-come, first-serve basis for Centre related errands and
outreaches for the Artists-in-Residence only. Cars are not available for extended use.

Studio

The artist in residence will be provided with a studio space and is expected to spend the majority of their stay working at the centre, interacting with local artists.

Workshops and Exhibitions

All artists in residence are expected to facilitate at one mentorship workshop within the duration of their residency. The artist is also required to produce a body of work that will be exhibited at the end of the residency period.

Open Door Policy

Kuona Trust Centre for Visual Arts is open and free to the public Monday through Friday, 9am to 5pm. During this time the Centre welcomes the general public to view its exhibitions and visit artists’ studios.
The Centre encourages the artists to invite the public into their studio unless they are at a place in their work where they cannot be distracted. On average the Centre attracts approximately 50 visitors per week and another 25 visitors during Open Studio events.

Outreaches

Each artist in residence and affiliate also has the opportunity to run an outreach program working with the surrounding community. The type and scope of these outreaches are mutually designed and agreed upon prior to the start of the residency by both Kuona Trust and the artist. Typical outreaches consist of practical art classes, demonstrations, or other special programming.

Final Reports and Artwork

The artist is expected to submit a written report at the end of the residency. Kuona Trust also requires that the resident donate one of his art pieces to go into its private art collection.

Application Requirements

All applications must be sent via email and include:

  • Artist Bio
  • Artist statement that provides background on your work as a whole. This may include previous exhibitions, workshops and projects.
  • The month(s) you would prefer. Please let us know how flexible you are.
  • A brief letter of motivation stating reasons for wishing to join the programme
  • At least 6 images of your recent work or links to website/blog Published books and/or press
  • 3 character references (scanned written letters acceptable), provided with the application.

    We’re looking for both references on your work, as well as, you as a person.
