Khirkee-ki-Khoj: Temple Installation

The Sai Baba Mandir at end of the street in Khirkee Extension plays a significant role in the community both geographically and socially. The priest at the temple is an interesting man with generous advice on life and politics. He mentioned once that he was unhappy with my involvement with the “lower classes” in the street, of how “they” are an incorrigible bunch. One fine day he asked if I would make a “statue” for the temple.
Ram Bali Chauhan and I brainstormed on interesting welded forms for this task. The sculpture is a welded metal structure that has a number of bells strung on it. The globe like structure rests on a ball bearing that revolves. Pushing the globe sets it on a spin, filling the temple with a cacophony of bells.

The sculpture was well received by the local community. Infact the regular visitors/devotees started circumambulating the sculpture in their routine prayer sessions at the temple.
