Khoj began its experiments with Art & Fashion in February 2011, through an intense two week residency titled Idea of FashionBorn out of an interest in widening the approaches to and scope of conversations within fashion, this first residency encouraged artists and practitioners from across several mediums to draw from disciplines not readily associated with the field. At the end of two weeks, what emerged was not just five works that delved into fashion related themes but also several frenetic debates and lively conversations – many of which were motivated by political, social and economic realities, but were also equally inspired by architecture, philosophy, science, history and technology.

In the two years that have passed, Khoj has, through a series of related residencies and programmes,  invited several artists and practitioners to build on (and add to) ideas that emerged in those first conversations. Through the larger Art & Fashion programme, artists-in-residence have developed works that have looked at the material possibilities of textile and fabric, have created conversations around issues of copy and appropriation, have begun to address the idea of clothing as an extension of the body, and have discussed notions of clothing as symbol & visual language.

To continue its engagement with fashion, Khoj is curating a third edition of its Art & Fashion residency, scheduled to run through November 2013. Participants in this edition of the residency will continue to look at several already established residency themes, particularly focusing on extending conversations about clothing as an extension of the body as well as unfolding further possibilities of material. Simultaneously, they will also begin exploring new themes, some of which include the post-human, the tensions between form and function and the relationship between performativity and fashion.

This year, the Artists in Residence for the Art & Fashion residency are:

  • Bracia, a duo consisting of Aga Klepacka & Maciek Chorąży
  • Kallol Datta
  • Réka Gottlieb
  • Anjana Kothamachu
  • Pallavi Paul
  • Elena Pereira
