Announcing Jithinlal NR as the Inaugural Artists for Artists Grantee

We are pleased to announce that Jithinlal NR is the recipient of the inaugural Artists for Artists grant. This edition the grant is supported by Subodh Gupta and Bharti Kher.

This year we received over 250 applications from all over the country. Following a rigorous jury procedure led by artists Bharti Kher, Seher Shah and Monica Narula, the applications were narrowed to a competitive pool keeping in mind several parameters such as quality of the work, strength of the proposal, diversity and ambition. The jury also noted the high number of applications that met this criteria. In its intention, the grant hopes to support an ongoing body of work by a young artist who already has a few years of independent practice behind them.

After much deliberation, Jithinlal NR was chosen as the grantee. The jury was particularly impressed with Jithin’s strong visual language, noting his experimentation with materials and mediums to bring to conversation “incidents,” that the artist has been recording through his own archive.  Jithin’s work investigates the disparities within our society, thinking through social atrocities, caste-based violence, discrimination and class politics.

The grant will support Jithinlal’s ongoing project that will culminate into an exhibition at Khoj in May 2019.
